I decided to pull a social media post out from the archives and make it a blog post because it’s just as relevant today as it was in March of 2020. How to cope with uncertainty.
Did you just mentally scream or even cringe at that word uncertainty? Well if you did you aren’t alone; for me I immediately feel unsettled when I think about uncertainty. Many of us don’t like it and that’s ok! You don’t have to like something to be able to cope with it. We all face uncertainty at times in our lives. It is a commonality to living and it can be hella uncomfortable. So what the heck do we do?
Well 3 of my go to concepts are
Flexibility: allows us the ability to transition and bend with the storm. It gives us the prison to connect with our present moment vs spending too much time in the what if’s of life. At it’s heart flexibility is powered by duality; that 2 opposing things can be true at once and that doesn’t invalidate, dismiss, or minimize your experience.
Curiosity: to be curious is to be compassionate. The practice of being curious grants us the path to maintain space for non judgment, to open ourselves up to connection, and to experience empathy with ourselves.
Nurturing: Here comes the self care portion of coping. Allowing yourself and others to care for you if needed. Asking yourself with gentleness “how have a cared for myself today” Care can be so many things but in times of uncertainty and high stress so often our basic needs get forgotten along the way. Check in with your sleep, eating, water, and allowing for less bandwidth.
There will be many other ways we can cope with uncertainty but these are just a few of my preferred frameworks to work from when I find myself dealing with uncertainty and the unknown. Maybe take a moment to reflect on what has been helpful for you in the past and what could be helpful in the future?
